From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́ʰagẓʰ-, reduplication of the root *ȷ́ʰas- (to laugh); whence also हसति (hasati). Also compare Pali jagghati (he laughs, ridicules). See the root हस् (has) for more.

      tvametānrudato jakṣataścāyodhayo rajasa indra pāre.
      Whether they are weeping or laughing, thou hast o’erthrown them, O Indra, on the sky's extremest limit.
