Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀣𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀣 (*thuttha), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀣𑀼𑀣 (*thutha), ultimately from Munda (Compare Sanskrit तुण्ड (tuṇḍa, beak)). Cognate to Punjabi ਥੁਥਨੀ (thuthnī), Nepali थुतुनो (thutuno), Bengali থোঁতা (thō̃ta, chin), Marathi थोतरी (thotrī, cheek).
