Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘃𑘝𑘰 (pāītā), from Sanskrit पादान्त (pādānta). Compare Gujarati પાંગત (pā̃gat), Hindustani पायँता (pāyãtā), پائن٘تِی (pā̃tī) / पायँती (pāyãtī). Related to पाय (pāy, foot).
