Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀼𑀝𑀺𑀬𑀸 (puṭiyā) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit पुटिका (puṭikā, a bag or vessel), from पुट (puṭa, a fold, pocket, hollow space). Equivalent to पुड़ा (puṛā, parcel) +‎ -इया (-iyā, feminine diminutive suffix). Compare Punjabi ਪੁੜੀ (puṛī) / پُڑِی (puṛī), Gujarati પડી (paḍī), Marathi पुडी (puḍī).
