Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀩𑁆𑀩𑀽𑀮 (babbūla), from Sanskrit बब्बूल (babbūla). The similarity of synonymous forms such as वर्वूर, वव्वूल make substrate origin likely.
