Ultimately from a reduplication of Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑀡 (*bhaṇa). Cognate with Hindustani بَھنْبَھنَانَا (bhanbhanānā) / भनभनाना (bhanbhanānā), Malvi भणभणानो (bhaṇbhaṇāno), Nepali भनभनाइनु (bhanabhanāinu), Maithili भनभनाएब (bhanabhᵊnāēb) / 𑒦𑒢𑒦𑒢𑒰𑒋𑒥 (bhanabhanāēba), Bengali ভনভনানো (bhonbhnanō).
