Borrowed from Classical Persian معاف (mu'āf), from Arabic مُعَافىً (muʕāfan), from the root ع ف و (ʕ f w). Compare Gujarati માફ (māph), Hindi माफ़ (māf), Punjabi ਮਾਫ (māph) / معاف (māf), Nepali माफ (māph).
