From Old Marathi 𑘦𑘰𑘭𑘰 (māsā), 𑘦𑘔 (macha), 𑘦𑘓𑘿𑘔 (maccha), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀘𑁆𑀙 (maccha), from Sanskrit मत्स्य (mátsya), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mátsyas. Doublet of मत्स्य (matsya). Cognate with Hindi मच्छ (macch), Sindhi مَڇُ‎ / मछु (machu), Punjabi ਮੱਛ (macḥ), Nepali माछा (māchā), Oriya ମାଛ (machô), Bengali মাছ (mach), Assamese মাছ (mas).
