From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráźʰati (to remain, stay), but of uncertain ultimate origin. See Sanskrit रहस् (rahas) for details. Cognate with Hindi रहना (rahnā), Gujarati રહેવું (rahevũ), Marathi राहणे (rāhṇe).
