Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘩𑘰𑘕𑘜𑘹 (lājaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀮𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀇 (lajjaï), from Sanskrit लज्जते (lajjáte). Cognate with Gujarati લાજવું (lājvũ), Hindi लाजना (lājnā), Sindhi لَڄَڻُ / लॼणु (laj̈aṇu).
