Inherited from Old Marathi वाफ (vāpha), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀸𑀉𑀮 (vapphāula, very hot), from 𑀯𑀸𑀳 (vāha, tear), from Sanskrit वाष्प (vāṣpa). Compare Bhojpuri भाप (bhāp).
