विभीषण (vibhīṣaṇa) stemm

  1. (Hinduism) Name of a brother of Ravana (his other brothers were कुबेर [by a different mother] and कुम्भ-कर्ण ; both रावण and विभीषण are said to have propitiated ब्रह्मा by their penances, so that the god granted them both boons, and the boon chosen by विभीषण was that he should never, even in the greatest calamity, stoop to any mean action ; hence he is represented in the रामायण as endeavouring to counteract the malice of his brother रावण, in consequence of which he was so ill-treated by him that, leaving लङ्का, he joined राम, by whom, after the death of रावण, विभीषण was placed on the throne of लङ्का)
