Inherited from Old Marathi वेळ (veḷa), व्हेळ (vheḷa), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀯𑁂𑀮𑀸 (velā), from Sanskrit वेला (velā). Compare Kannada ವೇಳೆ (vēḷe), Malayalam വേള (vēḷa), Tamil வேளை (vēḷai), Telugu వేళ (vēḷa).
