From Proto-Indo-European *sep-el-yé (to honor), a derivative of *sep-el- (honor), from *sep- (to care for). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕπω (hépō, to busy oneself with), Latin sepeliō (to bury, inter). See also सप् (sap, to honor).
