Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘭𑘻𑘚𑘜𑘹 (soḍaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀙𑁄𑀟𑁂𑀇 (choḍei), from Sanskrit क्षोटयति (kṣoṭayati). Cognate with Gujarati છોડવું (choḍvũ), Hindustani چھوڑْنَا (choṛnā) / छोड़ना (choṛnā), Sindhi ڇوڙڻُ / छोड़णु, Bengali ছোড়া (chōṛa), Marathi सोडणे (soḍṇe).
