Derived from Sanskrit अगणित (agaṇita), which enters into Middle Bengali as অগন্‌তি (ogon‌ti), which changes into Bengali as অগুন্তি for স্বরসঙ্গতি (śorśoṅgotoi, “vowel harmony”) and the effect of the word গুণ (gun).
