Etymology

edit

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit आर्य (ārya), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Áryas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Áryas (Aryan).

Old Indic ā́rya (with long a, vṛddhi-formed Sanskrit ā́rya-) is a cognate of Proto-Iranian *Áryah (with short a), Avestan 𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (airiia) and Old Persian 𐎠𐎼𐎡𐎹 (a-r-i-y /Ariya/). The term was used as a self-designator by both Indians and Iranians.
