Inherited from Sanskrit কঙ্গুনী (kaṅgunī), itself a variant of কঙ্গু (kaṅgu). Cognate with Assamese কণী-ধান (koni-dhan), Hindi कांगणी (kāṅgṇī), Punjabi ਕਂਗਣੀ (kaṅgṇī).
