Inherited from Sanskrit *चम्पवेल्लि (campavelli), from चम्प (campa, magnolia) +‎ वेल्लि (velli, Arabian jasmine). Cognate with Odia ଚାଁମେଲୀ (cā̃meli), Maithili 𑂒𑂧𑂵𑂪𑂲 (camelī), Old Awadhi चंबेली (cambelī), Hindustani चमेली (camelī) / چمیلی (camelī), Nepali चमेलि (cameli), Gujarati ચંપેલી (campelī), ચંબેલી (cambelī), ચમેલી (camelī), Punjabi ਚੰਬੇਲੀ (cambelī), Sindhi چَمبايلِي (cambelī).[1] Doublet of চম্পা (compa), চাঁপা (cãpa), বেলি (beli), and মল্লিকা (mollika).
