Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit পক্ষিন্ (pakṣín, bird, literally winged). Compare Punjabi ਪੰਖੀ (paṅkhī), Old Hindi पंषी (paṃkhī). Doublet of পক্ষী (pokkhi), a tatsama, and পাখি (pakhi), a tadbhava.
