Etymology edit

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀁𑀟 (*peṃḍa), *𑀧𑁂𑀟 (*peḍa, lump), from a substrate, probably the source of Sanskrit पिण्ड (piṇḍa) as well, whence পিণ্ড (pinḍo) and পিঁড়া (pĩṛa). Cognate with Odia ପେଡା (peḍa), ପେଣ୍ଡା (peṇḍa), Gujarati પેંડા (peṇḍā), Hindustani پیڑَا (peṛā) / पेड़ा (peṛā), Punjabi ਪੇੜਾ (peṛā) / پیڑا (peṛā), Marathi पेढा (peḍhā).
