Etymology

Inherited from Middle Bengali লেঁজ (lẽj), from earlier লাঁজ (lãj) with nasal coloring increasing vowel height, from Prakrit 𑀮𑀁𑀚 (laṃja​), from Sanskrit लञ्ज (lañja, tail), of substrate origin, cognate with Odia ଲାଞ୍ଜ (lāñja). Doublet of লাঙ্গুল (laṅgul), লাঙ্গুর (laṅgur), and লেঙ্গুড় (leṅguṛ), and possibly লেওড়া (leōṛa).
