Borrowed from Classical Persian هند (hind), from Middle Persian hnd (hind), from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hindūš), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *síndʰuš. Doublet of সিন্ধু (śindhu).
