Ultimately from Arabic نَقَّارَة (naqqāra), with the widespread change in Indo-Aryan descendants qq > g suggesting an intermediary. Cognate with Hindi नगाड़ा (nagāṛā), Nepali नगरा (nagarā), Odia ନାଗରା (nāgarā), Punjabi ਨਗਾਰਾ (nagārā), ਨਗਾੜਾ (nagāṛā), Sindhi نَغارو (naġāro). Doublet of નક્કારા (nakkārā).
