Borrowed from Sanskrit बहुजन (bahujana) / Pali bahujana.

The second sense gained popularity through the efforts of anti-caste social activists such as B.R. Ambedkar and Jyotirao Phule, as Scheduled Caste and Bahujan writers have suggested that caste opressed folks constituted 70 percent of the population.
