editFrom போக்கி (pōkki, “cleansed, cleaned, dealt with”, from போக்கு (pōkku, “to remove, dispel, cleanse”)), referring to the practice of discarding old and unused objects from one's household on the festival day as a sign of making room for new things in the coming year. Compare cognates Kannada ಭೋಗಿ (bhōgi) and Telugu భోగి (bhōgi).
