Etymology

Uncertain; possibly from either முளை (muḷai, to sprout)[1] or முள் (muḷ, thorn),[2][3] from Proto-Dravidian *muḷ (thorn). Likely cognate with Sanskrit मुलाली (mulālī́, lotus), Pali muḷāla, muḷālī (lotus root).[4]
