From Proto-Dravidian *pēn. Cognate with Kannada ಹೇನು (hēnu), Kui (India) ପେନୁ (pēnu), Kumarbhag Paharia पेनु (pēnu), Kurukh पेन् (pēn), Kuvi ପେନୁ (pēnu), Kodava ಪೇನ್ (pēn), Kolami పేన్ (pēn), Tamil பேன் (pēṉ), Tulu ಪೇನ್ (pēnŭ) and Telugu పేను (pēnu).
