From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀjaːŋꟲ¹ (to roast over the open fire), from Proto-Tai *ˀjɯəŋꟲ (to roast). Cognate with Thai ย่าง (yâang), Lao ຢ້າງ (yāng), ᦊᦱᧂᧉ (ẏaang²), Shan ယၢင်ႈ (yāang), Tai Nüa ᥕᥣᥒᥲ (yàang).
