Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-maŋ ~ s-mak (black, dark; ink). Cognate with Tibetan སྨག (smag, dark, darkness), མོག་པ (mog pa, dark-coloured) and Chinese (, ink).

The Myanmar-English Dictionary’s derivation from Pali masi (soot) is phonologically implausible.
