From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (enclosure).[1] Cognate with Thai เวียง (wiiang), Northern Thai ᩅ᩠ᨿᨦ (wiang), Shan ဝဵင်း (wáeng), Lao ວຽງ (wīang), S'gaw Karen ဝ့ၢ် (way̱).
