From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (“pliers, tongs”), from Proto-Tai *ɡiːmᴬ (“pliers, tongs”), from Middle Chinese 鉗 (MC gjem, “pliers, tongs”). Cognate with Thai คีม (kiim), Lao ຄີມ (khīm), Tai Dam ꪁꪲꪣ.
