Etymology

Origin is unknown. It is thought to come from one of the ancient Zan dialects. The Roman Governor of Cappadocia, Arrianus, mentions a river named Ἄρχαβίς (Árkhabís) or Ἀρχαβές (Arkhabés) in his work "Periplus Ponti Euxini".
