ᚺᛟᛚᛏᚨ (holta, “wood”) +‎ -ᛃᚨᛉ (-jaʀ, “coming from”), cognate with German Holz (“grove; woods; small forest”) from Proto-Germanic *hultą. holt- has also been interpreted as a place-name, thus meaning "coming from Holt", and as a masculine personal name; "the descendant of Holtaz".
