Etymology

From Middle Khmer ខ្លោវ (khlova, ignorant; stupid; etc) (first attested in 1704). Cognate with Thai เขลา (klǎo).

Before Middle Khmer, Headley et al. (1977) stated that it was borrowed from Thai เขลา (klǎo), whereas Chuon Nath (1966) stated that it was derived from Pali khala instead.
