Etymology

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *rit ~ *riit (“to tighten, to constrict”). Doublet of រឹត (rɨt, “to squeeze, to tighten, to fasten”), រឺត (rɨɨt, “to squeeze, to milk, to massage”). Compare Thai รีด (rîit, “to squeeze, to milk; to press, to iron”).
