From Proto-Mon-Khmer *rit ~ *riit (to tighten, to constrict). Doublet of រីត (riit, to flatten, to straighten), រឺត (rɨɨt, to squeeze, to milk, to massage). Compare Thai รีด (rîit, to squeeze, to milk; to press, to iron).
