From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kiŋᴮ ((small) branch). Cognate with Thai กิ่ง (gìng), Northern Thai ᨠᩥ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ກິ່ງ (king), ᦂᦲᧂᧈ (k̇iing¹), Khün ᨠᩥ᩠᩵ᨦ, Shan ၵိင်ႇ (kìng), Aiton ကိင် (kiṅ), Ahom 𑜀𑜢𑜂𑜫 (kiṅ).
