Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰetᴰˢ¹ (hot; peppery; pungent). Cognate with Thai เผ็ด (pèt), Northern Thai ᨹᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ເຜັດ (phet), ᦵᦕᧆ (ṗhed), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪸꪒ, Shan ၽဵတ်း (pháet), Phake ၸိတ် (phit), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜄𑜫 (phit).
