Ancient Macedonian edit

Etymology edit

Unknown. Apparently synonymous with Ancient Greek ἱμάς (himás), according to Hesychius of Alexandria.

The reading of the Hesychian gloss is not entirely clear: Μακεδόνες may also refer to a play of that name by Strattis.

Noun edit

ἀρφύς (arphús)

  1. (hapax) (leather) strap

Usage notes edit

  • Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
    • 5th century CE, Hesychius Alexandreus, Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
      ἀρφύς· ἱμάς. Μακεδόνες
      arphús; himás. Makedónes
arphús: (leather) strap, according to the Macedonians
