Etymology

Unknown. Schwyzer suggested a relation with ἄρδω (árdō, “to irrigate”), with a suffix -σος like in ἄλσος (álsos, “grove”). The suffix -σος, however, may be a substrate element. Gusmani compares Hittite [script needed] (arši, “plantation”).
