The potential form of 読む (yomu, “to read”).

Verb

読(よ)める • (yomeru) ichidan (stem 読(よ)め (yome), past 読(よ)めた (yometa))

1. to be legible; readable (able to be read)

   読(よ)める字(じ)で書(か)いて下(くだ)さい。

   Yomeru ji de kaite kudasai.

   Please write in legible letters.

2. to be pronounceable (able to be pronounced)

   「京」という字(じ)は「kin」とも「tin」とも読(よ)める。

   “京” to iu ji wa “kin” to mo “tin” to mo yomeru.

   The character "京" is pronounceable as both "kin" and "tin".

3. to be predictable (able to be predicted)

   来(らい)年(ねん)の動(どう)向(こう)が読(よ)める。

   Rainen no dōkō ga yomeru.

   The tendency of the next year is predictable.

4. to be calculable (of a person, able to be predicted)

   あいつの行(こう)動(どう)は読(よ)める。

   Aitsu no kōdō wa yomeru.

   His behavior is calculable.
