First attested in the Sohak eonhae (小學諺解 / 소학언해), 1586, as Middle Korean 그러모로 (Yale: kulemwolwo). Analyzable as 그렇 (geureot-, so, such, like that) +‎ 므로 (-meuro, on account of, owing to).
