First attested in the Sohak eonhae (小學諺解 / 소학언해), 1586, as Middle Korean 그러모로 (Yale: kulemwolwo). Analyzable as 그렇 (geureot-, “so, such, like that”) + 므로 (-meuro, “on account of, owing to”).
