First attested in the Neung'eomgyeong eonhae (楞嚴經諺解 / 능엄경언해), 1461, as Middle Korean  (Yale: mek).

From Old Chinese (OC *mlɯːɡ, “inkstick”), an ancient pre-Sino-Korean borrowing (Lee and Ramsey 2011, p. 76). The Sino-Korean reading is (, muk).
