Etymology

edit

From 부엉 (bueong, hoot, onomatopoeia) +‎ (-i, noun-deriving suffix).

First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 부〮허ᇰ (Yale: pwúhèng). The Middle Korean term lacked the suffix, and the bird was referred to directly by the sound of its call.
