First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 싸히〮다〮 (Yale: ssàhí-tá).

(ssat-, to stack, to pile up) + (-i-, passive suffix) + (-da, suffix conventionally given for citation forms).
