Etymology

edit

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *-niŋ. Cognate with Chuvash -ӑн (-ăn), Turkish -nin, Uzbek -ning, Kazakh -дің (-dıñ).

Suffix

edit

𐰤𐰭 (-niŋ, -nüŋ)

  1. Forms genitive case
    𐰉𐰆𐰑𐰣 (bodun, people) + ‎𐰤𐰭 (n²ŋ) → ‎𐰉𐰆𐰑𐰣𐰭 (bodunuŋ, the people's)

Usage notes

edit
  1. Unlike some Turkic languages, the initial n- drops after words with consonant endings.
