Etymology

edit

First attested as in den lande van accoy in 1305. Compound of an unclear first element of non-Germanic origin and ooi (land next to water). The first element might be derived from Akko (Acre) as a reference to the Crusades. The interpration of the first element as Middle Dutch Akke (a personal name) is incorrect.
