Attested in medieval charters as Arcobre and castro Alcobre; from a Celtic composite noun, from the deuterotheme *brixs (“hill”) and perhaps a prototheme ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂erkʷo- (“bow; arrow”).
