Luxembourgish edit

Etymology edit

From French moment, in part through German Moment (itself from the French). Ultimately from Latin momentum.

Loss of initial m- probably through rebracketing of such collocations as am Ament, an deem Ament; compare German im Moment (at the moment), in dem Moment (at that moment). The exact form Ament then through influence by synonymous Abléck (literally glance of the eye).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /aˈmænt/, [ɑˈmænt]

Noun edit

Ament m (plural Amenter)

  1. moment
Kanns du een Ament waarden, wann ech glift.
Can you wait one moment, please.
